"The second day of the Vugar Gashimov Memorial-2021 competition has come to an end.

The second day of the 7th international super tournament dedicated to the memory of prominent Azerbaijani chess player Vugar Gashimov ended on December 19.
The second and third rounds of rapid competitions were held.

In the first match of the second round, Azerbaijani representatives Shahriyar Mammadyarov and Vugar Asadli faced each other. The game ended with Mammadyarov's victory. Rauf Mammadov lost to US chess player Fabiano Caruana. Former world champion Richard Rapport (Hungary) defeated the representative of India Viswanathan Ananda, while Czech David Navara defeated Russian Sergei Karjakin .

In the second match of the tour, Vugar Asadli defeated Shakhriyar Mammadyarov, Fabiano Karuana defeated Rauf Mammadov and Sergei Karjakin defeated David Navara. Viswanathan Anand halved the score with Richard Rapport.
Shakhriyar Mammadyarov, who had the same number of victories, faced Vugar Asadli and David Navara faced Sergei Karjakin in the Armageddon. Shakhriyar Mammadyarov and Sergei Karjakin won the match.

In the first match of the third round, Shakhriyar Mammadyarov lost to Sergei Karjakin, Viswanathan Anand to David Navara, and Richard Rapport to Fabiano Caruana. Vugar Asadli drew with Rauf Mammadov.

 

In the return matches, Sergei Karjakin defeated Shakhriyar Mammadyarov, Rauf Mammadov defeated Vugar Asadli, and Richard Rapport defeated Fabiano Caruana. David Navara halved the score with Viswanathan Anand. Fabiano Caruana, who defeated Richard Rapport in Armageddon, gained 2 points.

After three rounds, Fabiano Caruana took the first place with 8 points and Richard Rapport took the second place with 7 points. Rauf Mammadov, Shakhriyar Mammadyarov and Sergei Karjakin, who have 5 points, share the 3-5th places. David Navara is in the sixth place with 4 points, Viswanathan Anand and Vugar Asadli are in the 7-8th places with 1 point.

According to the rules of the tournament, one round of rapid competitions consists of two games.

It should be noted that at the Vugar Gashimov Memorial, which is being held for the seventh time,all chess players compete in rapid and blitz. Rapid competitions in the tournament will consist of 7 rounds and will last until December 21. Blitz competitions will be held on December 22-23.
The rapid competition will be held with a time control of 15 minutes + 10 seconds, and the blitz with a time control of 5 minutes + 3 seconds.

The tournament is organized by the Vugar Gashimov Chess Foundation, supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Azerbaijan Chess Federation and sponsored by SOCAR. The competition is hosted by Fairmont Baku Hotel.

First Vugar Gashimov Memorial was held in Shamkir in 2014. Current world champion Magnus Carlsen won the tournament four times (2014, 2015, 2018, 2019), while Azerbaijani chess player Shakhriyar Mammadyarov won the tournament twice (2016, 2017).
